Prenox sponsors comedy cook-off road show

A true test of wit, humour and culinary skills

Industrial catering industry suppliers Prenox showed that they were serious about food, and laughter, when they signed up to be the catering equipment supplier for the Rhapsody’s Comedy Cook Off road show, which took place over the last six months.

These events, which showcased some of South Africa’s funniest comedians and celebrities, involved participating celebrity chefs teaming up with a comedian and having to cook a starter, main and desert from a mystery basket of ingredients. Celebrity judges were also invited to judge the wit, humour and culinary skills of each of the two teams on the night.

The top South African chefs who travelled to these seven events included Martin Kobold, honorary past president of the SA Chefs Association; Trevor Boyd, owner of Salon de Culinaire and Arnold Tanzer, Vice president of the SA Chefs Association and Sunday Times Chef of the Year in 2008.

Guest chefs at these events included Garth Shnier, Executive Chef of the Sandton Sun Hotel;  Jodi-Ann Pearton, winner of the coveted By Invitation Only Chef of the Year competition two years ago and Dilene Boyd, owner of Salon de Culinaire and the Unilever By Invitation Only Chef of the Year winner last year.

A high profile list of comedians and celebrities participated in these events and included Darren “Whackhead” Simpson; Bevan “Tooth Fairy” Cullinan; Graeme Joffe; Chris Forrest and Melt Sieberhagen. Malcolm “Player 23” Ferreira was the resident comedian and hosted each of the Rhapsody’s Comedy Cook –Off events.

Celebrity judges who had the privilege of tasting the delicious meals made by the teams at the various events included Wynand Olivier, Nico Panagio, Gerry Elsdon, Gareth Cliff, Pieter Koen, Paul du Toit, Gerrie Pretorius, Terrence Bridget and Garth Collins.

In an article published in the Polokwane Observer in December last year, after the Rhapsody’s Cook-Off had taken place there, editor of the newspaper Yolande Nel, said that this event not only showed the people of Polokwane how to party, “but above all instilled a culture based on an appreciation for food, drink and only the best service.

For this purpose they brought an invasion of renowned chefs, packed the restaurant with like-minded food lovers and introduced two comedians, Malcolm Ferreira and Melt Sieberhagen, as entertainers. Armed with mixing bowls of humour and ingredients unbeknown to them, the two comedians and their assistants were up against the stop watch in the purpose-built kitchen.”

Yolande says that long after the show was over, that distinctive Rhapsody’s fever was still tangible. “It was an evening of great food, service and interaction – all ingredients the eatery is known for”.

“We at Prenox were thrilled to be involved as one of the sponsors of this unique road show. Our kitchen equipment helped create the delicious and distinctive meals that were made and we hope to be involved in these comedy cook off events again in the future”, says Ingrid Johnson, Client Service Manager at Equipment Design & General Engineering (Edge) which manufactures Prenox products.

Prenox was the perfect choice to supply kitchen equipment as their unique modular range has the flexibility to be tailored to fit any given space. They worked with each Rhapsody’s venue on the space specifications and workspace needed by the chefs and comedians for each event in order to supply a fully functional kitchen with workspace that could accommodate two teams per venue.

As a result of Prenox’s successful association with Rhapsody’s and the fact that their kitchen’s were highly rated by the chefs who had the opportunity to try them out during the cook-off events, they were recently requested to facilitate the installation of kitchen equipment at the new Rhapsody’s Lounge at Lynnwood Bridge – a relaxed, urban space where patrons can sit back and enjoy stylish food and designer beverages. Prenox utilized the limited space available by installing modular equipment and using freezers and fridges as bases, allowing for optimal working space.

Prenox operates within the Industrial Catering Industry. Prenox designs, manufactures and supplies a wide range of industrial kitchen equipment, convection ovens and the unique modular range. All products are manufactured under Edge (Equipment Design & General Engineering) locally, to the same standard as global products on the market.
